As Christians we think we know Jesus. But do we really know Him? We can know lots of things about Jesus, but to really know Him, we need to feel His presence and His power in our lives.
Sadly, lots of Christians appear to live a life in Christ, at least on the outside. They do things out of duty. They react solely out of another’s expectations. But is that what it means to know Jesus, to really be a Christian? And if you don’t really know Jesus, how can you follow Him? If you chose to follow a leader, shouldn’t you know all there is to know about that leader? Well, here are the things you should know about Jesus.
Jesus is the Son of God. If Jesus had never come in human form, God would be a total mystery to us, even though all around we can see the beauty of God’s creation. Without the Son—without God in the flesh—we would be lost.
Jesus is the Savior of the world. To a child who is rescued from drowning, the lifeguard is a savior. To the person saved from a burning building, a firefighter is a savior. And to us—the children of the world—Jesus is the Savior. He rescued us from sin and death because we couldn’t do it on our own. We need a Savior, every day of our lives.
Jesus is the changer of hearts and lives. If you have been rescued from drowning, are you going to jump right back into the deep water when you can’t swim? If you have been rescued from a burning building, are you going to turn around and run right back into that building? Certainly not! Jesus has saved us from eternal death, and then He changes us from within so that we will live good, holy, productive lives in His service. Jesus changes our hearts when we stray from His path. He helps us understand right from wrong, and He brings us back with His grace. It’s called repentance. We accept Jesus into our hearts, and we are changed from within.
Jesus is our Lord and Master. Not the kind of Lord and Master that ‘lords’ it over on us, his servants. No, even though Jesus has every right to do so, he doesn’t. He asks only that we obey Him out of love, not out of duty. That’s who our Lord and Master Jesus really is!
Jesus is the world’s greatest teacher. Everywhere Jesus went people followed him listening to his every word. When he was twelve years old, we’re told he taught the priests and the elders in the Temple. Even people with great knowledge and power like Nicodemus came to him for life-changing counsel. Can we do any less?
Jesus is the Mediator of the Covenant. In a world full of uncertainty, thankfully Jesus holds it all together in Holy Scripture, the Old and New Testaments, the way we learn how to live the best life we can in the power of the Spirit.
This Jesus we worship is the only way to live a holy and fulfilled life. Etch His holy words into your soul. And strive to become the best person possible in His Holy Name.
